Home Interests Animal Rescue Photo Album Favorites In October and December of 2005 I spent time in Mississippi with the Best Friends Animal organization rescuing animals as an aftermath of hurricane Katrina. This was a major animal rescue effort never before seen or so thoroughly documented in U.S. history and has had an impact on the country in terms of awareness of peoples relationships with their “pets” that will have a long term effect on how we deal with the hitherto unrecognized victims of natural disasters. This was perhaps the only positive effect of hurricane Katrina. In the time I spent in Mississippi I met many dedicated and concerned volunteers from a very wide geographic area. Not just the U.S. but Canada as well. For me, it was a character building event and I went back for more. Here, photographically, are some of my impressions of the experience. It was hot, and humid, it was loud, imagine 300 dogs barking most of the night and you are camped out in your 2 person back pack tent. Thank god for my iPod! I met wonderful people and some of the effort has carried over to my return to Colorado. I've since taken the Noah's Wish First Responder training and the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) first responder training. Got to meet a lot of super dedicated people and learned a whole lot about what went on after Katrina. I'm in "for the duration" so to speak. Hoping for a real light year disaster-wise, but prepared for whatever comes along.
