CATS

We started doing cat rescue/foster care in California.  It was challenging and rewarding.  I'm not sure how it started, but Pat began receiving calls whenever one of the nurses she worked with would have a litter from a stray or a child who brought home a very young stray that they didn't know how to deal with.  We began taking litters in to raise until they were on solid food and cute enough to find homes for. We made a significant effort to find good homes for the "kitties" when they were old enough to be adopted, and made a deal with a local cat vet clinic to get a discounted rate for spay/neuter services so as not to compound the cat overpopulation problem.  Then we followed up with the new families to insure that they were doing their part.

We never lost track of any of the adoptees while we were in the area, but . . .  sometimes it was hard to find a home for a "problem" kitty or the "ugly duckling" so-to-speak, so . . . we had a few that stuck, which is why we now have six cats as room mates.

We love them all.

Stray Cat

Oh what unhappy twist of fate

Has brought you, homeless, to my gate?

The gate where once another stood

To beg for shelter, warmth and food.

For from that day I ceased to be

The master of my destiny.

While he, with purr and velvet paw

Became within my house, The Law.

He scratched the furniture and shed

And claimed them idle of my bed.

He ruled in arrogance and pride

And broke the heart the day he died.

So if you really think, oh cat,

I’d willingly relive all that

Because you come, forlorn and thin

Well . . .don’t just stand there . . . come on in!
